Ask Margaret Hale

I have been a stranger in a strange land

Further house hunting.  I have finally managed to reach a good idea with regards to prices for rent and such.  Truly, I hope that the house I visited today will be the one which will be our home.  It was quite small, compared even to our cottage in Helstone, but compared to other housing options in Milton, it seems the most suited to our needs.  Of course, the wall paper will all have to go, as it is the most hideous of shades that I have ever seen.
Unfortunately, there were some…awkward moments for me with regards to this house.  When I arrived, a gentleman working for a Mr. Thornton was already there, and I heard him gossiping with the landlord about why father had moved us so suddenly to Milton.  Naturally, I had to interrupt.  And as Mr. Thornton’s employee was not eager to tell me about his employer, I demanded to see Mr. Thornton himself.  I will record what happened after at a later time…

Our first days in Milton.  We have been house hunting, with Mama and Dixon waiting for us in the hotel where we have spent our nights.  I hope that today I shall have greater luck in actually finding a place where we might be able to live.  It might not live up to Mama’s expectations, but it will be better than a hotel, to say the least.

Dixon has been complaining about the behavior of the servants at the hotel, but I must admit, in her years of service to our family, Dixon has begun to give herself airs.  I love her dearly, as I would love my own Aunt, but there are times when she can be so trying.

Poor Papa is also suffering, though he never allows Mother to see it.  I hope that our new home will give him peace.

askkittybennet asked: Good day, Ms. Hale, I do hope this finds you well and in good health. It is quite a pleasure to make your acquaintance. Sincerely, Catherine Bennet

Miss Bennet, I am very grateful for your kind words, as I hear so few in this strange new place where I find myself.  I am in well enough health, though I fear for my mother.  I hope that we shall continue a correspondence.
